Embora n\u00e3o fosse conhecido na \u00e9poca, William Chrisman HS seria na verdade a continua\u00e7\u00e3o do Independence Hs e herdaria muitos de seus calouros, professores, funcion\u00e1rios, equipamentos, livros, a m\u00fasica da escola e o anu\u00e1rio intitulado \u201cThe Gleam\u201d. O Sr. Chrisman era um cidad\u00e3o muito respeitado em Independence. Ele havia sido eleito para o primeiro Conselho de Educa\u00e7\u00e3o do Distrito Escolar da Independ\u00eancia em 1867. Swope pediu que os custos de constru\u00e7\u00e3o da escola n\u00e3o fossem inferiores a $75.000,00 e que ela fosse constru\u00edda em dezoito meses.
