The commandment to observe the Sabbath day and keep it holy comes from the time of Moses revealing the ten commandments to the children of Israel. In Exodus 20:8-11<\/em><\/strong>, we read the following:<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Remember the\u00a0sabbath\u00a0day, to keep it\u00a0holy.<\/em><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work:<\/em><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
But the seventh day\u00a0is\u00a0the sabbath of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0thy God:\u00a0in it\u00a0thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy\u00a0stranger\u00a0that\u00a0is\u00a0within thy gates:<\/em><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
For\u00a0in\u00a0six\u00a0days the\u00a0Lord\u00a0made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them\u00a0is,\u00a0and rested the seventh day: wherefore the\u00a0Lord\u00a0blessed\u00a0the sabbath day, and\u00a0hallowed\u00a0it.<\/em><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Every \u201cseventh day\u201d would fall seven days after the last \u201cseventh day.\u201d If one started the count on a different day of the week, then the sabbath would fall on a different \u201csevent<\/em>h day.\u201d Essentially, every seven days from the starting point would be the Sabbath.<\/div>\n

So, how did we get a starting point?<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
The Israelites in the wilderness were\u00a0told to gather manna every morning<\/a>\u00a0except for the Sabbath. No manna would be available on the Sabbath and instead the Israelites were instructed to collect a double portion on the day before the Sabbath. Having no manna to collect would make a very clear distinction as to which day was the Sabbath day.<\/div>\n

Throughout Judaism, the Sabbath has been remembered as what our modern calendar would call Saturday (more specifically from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday). The religious leaders who put Jesus through the trial that led to His Crucifixion held to their own code of conduct. Among their rules was to not let a crucified body remain on the cross over the Sabbath day. Death by crucifixion, however, could take quite a long time, which is why the practice of breaking the victim\u2019s legs became the norm for speeding up the process. This is explained in John 19:31<\/strong><\/em>: \u201cThe Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be\u00a0broken, and\u00a0that\u00a0they might be taken away.<\/em>\u201d<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
We know, therefore, that Jesus died on what would now be called Friday (before sundown). Counting Friday as the first day, Saturday (the Sabbath) as the second day, and Sunday as the third day (though obviously, a full 72 hours did not pass), Jesus fulfilled His promise and prophecy that He would rise \u201cthe third day.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Among the Jews were many who believed in Jesus and worshipped Him. Obviously, however, there were many who were angry with Jesus and rejected Him as the Messiah. Rabbi Richard Sarason\u00a0wrote<\/a>, \u201cTo distinguish themselves from the Jews, Christians began to celebrate Sunday as the Lord\u2019s Day (the day Christ arose from the dead) rather than celebrating the Jewish Sabbath (although some Christian groups persisted in observing the [original, Jewish] Sabbath).\u201d<\/div>\n

Changing the Sabbath day to honor Christ\u2019s Resurrection meant that from that point forward, every seventh day would continually land on a Sunday.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Does it break the commandment to \u201cRemember the Sabbath day and keep it holy\u201d if we worship God on a day different than the original Sabbath?<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Not at all.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u201cThe Sabbath has eternal significance. The Old Testament declares the Sabbath is to be observed as a \u201cperpetual covenant\u201d (see Ex. 31:13\u201317<\/strong><\/em>), which does not necessarily mean that it should be forever on the same day, but rather that the Sabbath is a covenant for eternity\u2014that is, of eternal significance\u2014and is needed by mortals in every generation for their frequent spiritual rejuvenation,\u201d\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0Robert J. Matthews, who served as chairman of the department of ancient scripture at Brigham Young University. The context of the passage seems to make that point clear. It is evident from the Bible that the sacred day was the seventh day of the week during Old Testament times, whereas in the New Testament it was observed on the first day of the week by the church after the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the grave.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
The commandment is that one day in seven (or every seventh day) is used to worship the Lord. \u201cThe significant fact seems not to be\u00a0which\u00a0<\/em>day is observed so much as\u00a0how\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0why\u00a0<\/em>the day is observed.\u201d<\/div>\n

Remembering Christ\u2019s sacrifice and Atonement, culminating in His Resurrection is the true purpose of honoring the Sabbath day. Thus Sunday\u2014every<\/em>\u00a0seventh day\u00ad\u00ad\u2014is a perfect time to remember Him, honor Him, and worship Him.<\/div>\n

Doctrine and Covenants Section 119:7<\/strong><\/em> “The Saints are to observe the first day of the week commonly called the Lord’s day, as a day of rest:\u00a0 as a day of worship, as given in the covenants and commandments.\u00a0 And on this day they should refrain from unnecessary work; nevertheless, nothing should be permitted to go to waste on that day, nor should necessary work be neglected.<\/em>“<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
