General Conference April 1-7, 2018
By President James A. Vun Cannon
Remnant Record 2018 – Volume 1
“Led By Revelation”
This year’s General Conference was planned with many exciting activities and special opportunities for the saints to share in together. The conference opened with the flag ceremony, in which we pay respect to those countries where we have active missions of the church, and, of course, to recognize the United States of America, our home for the church and Zion.
Many worship services were provided in the evenings for the saints. Speakers were provided from the leadership of the church, who preached on very specific themes created by President Frederick N. Larsen. These services were each enhanced by the wonderful ministry of music provided by those who willingly shared their talents. These special gifts helped set the tone and invited the Spirit to bless our times of worship.
Seventy William Baker was set apart as a President of Seventy in the First Quorum of Seventy. Seventy Ted Webb was recognized for his years as President of Seventy. He will continue his ministry as a member of the Quorum of Seventy. Apostle Robert Murie was honorably released from his apostolic minsistry, and he will continue to fulfill his high priesthood calling as his health and strength allow. Special recognition and plaques were given to Clara VanBiber and Jim Gates to recognize their years of service to the Lunch Partners program.
The President’s Lunch this year was again held for the young people. In attendance were President Larsen and First Lady Mary Lou Larsen, accompanied by the counselor to the president, James Vun Cannon, and his wife, Shellie. The youth always enjoy their special time with Brother Larsen.
On three afternoons, conference attendees had the opportunity to take one or two specially arranged tours. They had the choice of visiting the Visitors Center located in the church headquarters building or taking a drive to Bountiful, or both. Tour buses were rented, and saints were shuttled to Bountiful or the Visitors Center by a tour guide.
The tour at Bountiful included a riding tour of the community, with stops along the way to see the various places in the community. A slideshow was also provided at the newly constructed church building, followed by a tour of that facility.
At church headquarters, those on the tour were shown the Visitors Center. They could see the progress that had been accomplished and were given descriptions of future plans. They then had the opportunity to view the church video, designed as a missionary tool for the church. This was followed by a discussion of the very unique video viewing room and movie design. Those who took advantage of these tours enjoyed seeing the positive progress the church is making.
The Women’s Council hosted their annual Women’s Reception. The women had fun getting to know each other better with visiting and an ice-breaker activity and, once again, were pleased to welcome President Larsen. He spoke to them about his excitement over new projects and also expressed deep appreciation for the faith of the women in the church. The council recognized two sisters who were retiring: Patricia Walsh and Alisa Friedrich, and welcomed new members: Leith Setter and Jolene Webb.
No conference would be complete without special actives for the young people, and a particular thanks goes to those who made those times possible.
It is our hope and prayer that all who attended this year’s conference were blessed and took a little of that spirit to share with those who could not come and also to those not of the church.
